Yes, Summer is the season of cold drinks, and in Peru is the season of Ceviche and HELADO (ice-cream), Limenians like me run for one the minute after the sun starts to shine up on the sky, quite unusual phenomena in a city that is famous for having grey “donkey’s-belly” sky most of the year.
So, when summer is here we can’t wait to go to an Heladeria (ice-cream store) to get one…but if you don’t have time to go, or one near by we have these thousands of sacrificed men and women that ride their little and heavy tricicles throught the streets of Lima under the burning sun to get you your favorite ice-cream flavour (mine, the classic Chocolate , vanilla and Lucuma).
Unexpensive prices, usually from 1 sol to 4 soles ( 30 cents to 1 dollar 30 cents), they are ussually from the peruvian brand D’Onofrio, one of the oldest yet existing ice-cream companies stablished by an italian inmigrant that in 1897 started with his family an unknowned business for the locals, the preparation of Ice-cream, now a days D’Onofrio is one of the most important and famous peruvian companies ever, so if you decide to try one remember that you are not only trying a product of good quality, you are as well helping your vendor’s family economy.
Can I give you a recommendation? if you want to try something different, try Lucuma flavour, it’s a local fruit that I’m sure you will love.
Enjoy this hot summer.
